Chow Chow, due to its majestic coat needs daily grooming to keep the coat free of tangles. They should be kept inside close to the family unlike other dogs which are comfortable outside doing guarding duties because their coat can retain dirt. A fenced yard is appropriate for exercise which is a moderate amount in case of Chow Chow. It is also important to keep eyes and facial folds clean. Face can be cleaned with a damp cloth or a wet wipe after meals. They like to be the centre of attention also and enjoy being petted and held often. Provide good quality food and water at regular intervals during the day. Daily walks and games are highly beneficial too. Training is not very necessary. For the Chow Chow to do well with houses with frequent visitors, obedience training can be helpful.
Purebred Chow Chows are neither overly aggressive nor overly timid. The only time when a Chow Chow shows its aggression is when confronted by a stranger. They can easily live in an apartment but need daily exercise or otherwise, they show signs of boredom and restlessness. They can bond very well with other pets if they have met each other at an early age and socialized. They are like a panda that looks like a teddy bear so it is not possible to not love them. A loved and a well-raised dog is never aggressive. If raised with kids then he can accept them happily. However, they do not respond to abuse so older kids can bond well with them.
